Get Your Tournament - News And Info

Written by Glenn | 05 January 2011

Evolution's 2011 season will include a seeding points system, which will take into account several tournaments that happen from now until July. At the moment, 10 tournaments are on the block. The top players from those tournaments will earn seeding points that will be used when the divisions are put in place.

To some of you, it might not mean much because you might not think it will make a difference. You might think that you'll get a point and have to face Daigo Umehara after the third round, if you get that far. Based on the possibility of the amount of attendants, it probably won't happen.

I want to give you some idea of how powerful just one seeding point might be.

There's the possibility of 2,000 players competing in the Super Street Fighter IV tournament this year. At the moment, if there are no seeding tournaments put in, as few as many as 160 players could earn seeding points. If each tournament didn't reach the 128 quotia, then only 80 players would get seeding points.

At 2,000 players, the 160 seeding players make up 8 percent of the bracket. And if there are only 80 players, then the number drops to 4 percent. That's insane.

So, if you're one of those players that like to play the bracket game and hope for the best, would you rather be one of 1,840 players and hope that you don't face an elite player right away, or one of 160 players that is guaranteed to get some help early in the tournament?

At 2,000 players, it is 12 wins to the title undefeated. And if you lose, it could be as many as 24 consecutive wins. Not sure who had the longest winning streak in the losers bracket -- I remember Gamerbee winning at least six in a row -- but it didn't matter because the championship match were two guys that started the Top Eight in the winners bracket.

Wouldn't you want to get as much help as possible to win Evolution? It starts with these 10 tournaments. Make sure you get a seeding point. It is going to help out.

evo2011

Evolution 2011 will take place July 29-31 at the Rio Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. It was held there in 2009, the first time Super Street Fighter IV was on the roster. In addition, there will be eight tournaments that will help with seeding leading up to the July event. The first event will be West Coast Warzone, to take place on Jan. 14-16.

The point systems to be used will only be for Super Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. So at the moment, you know two of the games that will be on the roster.

Make sure to head to the Evolution tournament site and Shoryuken for all of the details. Here's some:
Starting in early January, EVO is partnering with the top grass-roots tournament organizers to form a regular season of fighting games. Our 2011 season will run from January through July, culminating in the EVO World Finals July 29-31 at the Rio Hotel and Resort, Las Vegas. At each stop of the tournament season, players will earn ranking points that will directly determine their seed in the tournament brackets at the EVO World Finals. With literally thousands of players attending the finals, you're going to want to secure that seed if you want to advance far in the brackets.

Versus City has some stats of a few players from Japan that have played Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition. It makes you think about how good they really are. These are players that have won nearly nine out of 10 times, which is insane. Yes, Daigo Umehara is on this list:

Here's three notables, according to Versus City:
1. Daigo Umehara (Yun) – 16,067 BP, 89% win rate
2. Matsugoro (Dudley) – 13,145 BP, 86% win rate
3. aka jojo (M.Bison) – 11,828 BP, 84% win rate

Brawl will not return to Major League Gaming's pro circuit, CEO Sundance DiGiovanni said in an interview with vVv Gaming earlier this week.

Go here to listen to the podcast.

DiGiovanni, who said in the podcast with vVv Gaming that he is "a big fan of Smash," said a lack of support from Nintendo was one reason; Nintendo did not allow the league to broadcast the tournaments or have post-produced content, while the other games had Internet streams and video features.

Also, the money incident between two players was another reason. Jason "Mew2King" Zimmerman was suspended by the league for reportedly fixing a match between he and ADHD. Some reports had it that ADHD paid off Mew2King to intentionally lose, while others said the two players were splitting prize money.

"If I knowingly stand by and let a community behave in a certain manner and creates a tournament environment that's corrupt, I expose myself to litigation," DiGiovanni said. "No. 2, I personally find it revolting."

The interview also covers the World Cyber Games, Old School games, leveling out the importance of games on the pro circuit, as well as some thoughts on an all-female division. Tekken 6 was not mentioned during the interview.

madden_covers

Has the film industry ran out of ideas? I hear that a lot. I don't know because I rarely see movies (one a year, and for 2010, it was "Scott Pilgrim vs the World").

The Wrap is reporting that EA Sports is planning on creating a movie based off of the so-called "Madden Curse." Every year for more than a decade, a player has been picked to be on the cover of Madden. And for some weird reason, the player either has a bad year performance-wise, bad moment in a critical game, or horrific injury. Most of the time, it's been a horrific injury.

Drew Brees is the latest Madden cover athlete, and while he hasn't had a devastating injury, he has the most interceptions this season.

It sounds like the movie is going to be historical fiction; I'm wondering what year the movie will be set in, because if it's done anywhere in the 2000s, we'll have to speculate whether the movie is based off of that year's Madden cover athlete.

Here's more from The Wrap:

The story will follow a former Madden video game champion who is forced out of retirement just as he finds himself on the corner of the game's cover -- and subject to the curse.

Pat O'Brien, VP of EA Entertainment, is spearheading the project as one of its producers.

O'Brien wasn't immediately available for comment on Monday, but an individual at Electronic Arts confirmed that the company is developing a movie about the so-called curse.

In 2007, EA Sports' director of marketing Chris Erb told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "I don't know that we believe in the curse. The players don't believe in the curse."

wcg_poll

The World Cyber Games announced late Thursday a sketch result of its game poll, which was conducted earlier in the month. The two main fighting games at the moment, Super Street Fighter IV and Tekken 6, both made the top 10, according to the organization.

The WCG did not release specifics on the poll, including which game was the top. Tekken 6 was in the tournament series in 2010, but Super Street Fighter IV was not.

Here's more from the organization:
Here are some games that made the top 10. The recent big hit games, such as StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, Call of Duty Black Ops, and Super Street Fighter 4 are newly listed on top 10. Results also showed that many of the long-running WCG official games including Counter-Strike, FIFA Soccer, and Warcraft, are still beloved games. There was also strong support from the Tekken community, making sure that it stays on the top 10 list.

Perhaps the funniest change in the Madden 11 update is that San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith gained a point and is now with an overall rating of 77. He's still the best quarterback on the team by rating. I'm guessing that this change happened before the flop last night against the San Diego Chargers.

Adrian Peterson last week had an overall rating of 99, but slipped back to 98.

Here's more from EA Sports:

It's been another busy week of transactions and rating adjustments in the NFL. Here are a few of the highlights for this week:

  • Big Week 15 rating adjustments at the top: Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson is back to 99 Overall. Adrian Peterson slips to 98 Overall after a lackluster performance against the Giants. A couple of other players are pounding on the 99 Overall door, including Troy Polamalu, Haloti Ngata, and Champ Bailey who all move up to 98 Overall in this week's update.
  • Approximately 430+ transactions, rating adjustments and depth chart moves are updated in this Week 14 update.
  • Over 175+ player equipment updates this week thanks to our resident NFL Player Gear Guru and Madden tester extraordinaire, Mr. Dustin Smith.
  • Eight Team Overall ratings updated this week. The Patriots keep moving up the charts with their elite level of play; now at 93 Overall. On the flip side, the Bengals and Vikings continue to slide.

You can sign up now for the 2011 eSports World Cup, but there is one catch; the game you pick as the game you want to play might not make the official roster when it is revealed in a few months.

Players are allowed to pick from 20 different games, which include Super Street Fighter IV. Tekken 5 is listed as one of the games. In the 2010 series, Super Street Fighter IV was used, but Tekken 6 was not. Justin Wong won the grand final.

There is also an option for "other."

The 2011 Finals Tournament is scheduled to take place in France, as it did this year. Here's more from the ESWC:
The best gamers all around the world will be able to enter in a new ESWC season and try to qualify for the 8th Electronic Sports World Cup™ 2011 Grand Final (ESWC 2011).

The Grand Final will be held in France by the end of the next year (November/December 2011). Final date and venue will be announced early 2011.

The ESWC 2011 will reward winners with a total prize of $220,000. In 2010, Games-Solution was the first company in electronic sport that used a bank guaranty to insure players they will get their recompense. Following the success that the community shown for this process, the same system will be settled this year.

The World Cyber Games is asking for your input on what games should be included in the 2011 tournament series.

There are seven categories where you can give your input, and each category has its own suggested games. For example, the racing genre has Forza Motorsport III and F1 2010 and even Mario Kart Wii (thank you!).

In the fighting game category, there's Tekken 6 and Super Street Fighter IV, among others. Tekken 6 was a game on the 2010 roster, but not Super Street Fighter IV.

Voting ends Sunday.

In voting, the WCG is asking people to consider the quality, accessibility and community of the games being nominated. Here's more from the organization:
The goal of this survey is to gather the opinions of gamers worldwide, to know which competitive games they are interested in participating or viewing. The results will help WCG at all levels - global, regional or national - to organize events that are more fun to take part in, physically or virtually.

Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson will receive the highest overall ratings possible, a 99, when the next Madden 11 update goes live.

Last week, Peyton Manning had his 99 rating taken away, as he threw a load of interceptions in a couple games. Now, with Brady and Peterson having monster weeks recently, they get the bump up.

Here's more from EA Sports:

It's been another busy week of transactions and rating adjustments in the NFL. Here are a few of the highlights for this week:

  • Welcome back to 99 Overall-ville Tom Brady and Adrian Peterson! This week, both Brady and Peterson get the highly coveted 99 Overall rating back after outstanding performances.
  • Approximately 125+ transactions, rating adjustments and depth chart moves are updated in this Week 14 update.
  • Four Team Overall ratings updated this week. The Patriots are the biggest winners with a 2 point boost to 92 Overall (the best in Madden NFL 11 currently) while the Jets suffer the biggest drop to 89 Overall.
