Prior to this past weekend, only one fighting game player had trended worldwide on Twitter — Daigo Umehara after he won the Super Street Fighter IV tournament at Evolution 2010.

This year was much different. Several players trended. I asked publically whether it'd be a bigger surprise that nobody trended or more than one player trended. The general consensus was that it'd be a bigger surprise if more than one player was on the board.

Well, it happened. Here's some screencaps from Twitter showing the players that were trending.

Perfect Legend was first up. This was moments after he won the Mortal Kombat 9 title. Out of all the players to trend, he was probably the biggest surprise of the night. Most people who were following on Twitter realized that if Perfect Legend was trending, then it was almost assured that more players were going to, given that there were still one exhibition and two titles left to be decided.

Viscant won the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament. At this point, my computer was acting up and it wouldn't update the trending topics. But thanks to many followers, people screencapped the trending topics showing Viscant being fourth. He ended up being the highest player to trend that night. (Picture via ipodschun)

And then came the Super Street Fighter IV tournament. Wolfkrone was eliminated in seventh and soon trended.

After that, Fuudo and Poongko were trending at the same time, in part because they were playing in the winners finals. (Picture thanks to DercyDS)

What about Daigo? He eventually made it, but I didn't see it until after he defeated Kindevu and made the losers finals. faced Latif (Corrected).

And then soon after, Latif, Daigo and Poongko were all trending at the same time!

After winning the SSF4 title, Fuudo had the stage all to himself.

Will there ever be another time when a fighting game player trends worldwide? Let's hope so.
