UPDATE: Videos of both championship matches are now available. Go to the jump.
SIMI VALLEY - The finals of last night's tournament had to be one of the more entertaining matches in an HD Remix tournament that I've seen in months. It was an extreme guessing game, where BlueTallCans tried to overcome the "wall" that had been set up by DGV.
I had to break out the counter for this one because BlueTallCans needed to find a way to break past the hadouken, low jab or fake fireball. That mix helped DGV barely prevail.
As you'll hear tomorrow morning (or late tonight if you have an iTunes subscription), BlueTallCans said one of the keys to battling DGV was trying to figure out when he was going to throw a fireball or a fake. I have more about this in the notes section.
The recap after the jump ...
Title match result

Second Championship: DGV 3, BlueTallCans 2
Match breakdown

The title match was over when ...
... with 58 seconds left in the final round of the final game, DGV nailed a flaming hadouken, putting BlueTallCans on the brink. BlueTallCans then jumped in and DGV counterd with a back-air roundhouse.
Player of the tournament
BlueTallCans, for pushing DGV to the brink. Being patient and guessing right up until the end helped him stay in the title match. Honorable mention going to Muffin, who broke into the top three with his Dee Jay.
Other notes
DGV used the fake fireball as part of a bait to get BlueTallCans to make a mistake. In both finals contests, DGV threw 137 fake fireballs (64, 73). And he threw probably 4 times as many low jabs in addition to the fake fireballs. In looking back at the match, he seemed to have more success when he stayed true.
I also thought it was going to be over in the last round of the first final. BlueTallCans jumped in late after he guessed right on a hadouken. But instead of the typical jump-in roundhouse to two punches combo that would have finished DGV (or at least gotten a dizzy), BlueTallCans grabbed him and started biting. That wasn't enough damage. Then, BlueTallCans got priority standing fierce over a spinning kick. The two "reset" positions in the guessing game and BlueTallCans got a final jump-in roundhouse to win and force a second final.
