ryuFull credit for this goes to Ryan "Filipino Champ" Ramirez, who suggeted I try to check out a new statistic. Whether this will result in anything remains to be seen, but I think we have something legitimate.

Filipino Champ's idea was to look at what happens on wake-up. What do players do in that situation? I didn't think much of it at first because my thought was "Players fall down 500 times in a round, so what?" But as I thought about it more, it seemed to make sense. Falling down and wake-up can be big turning points in a contest, especially late.

I decided to do my first test on last night's Wednesday Night Fights 2.4 finals match between Floe and Alex Valle (stats of the match are here, if you'd like).

I decided to break down the wake-ups much like how I do with EX meter usage. In this case, a player either got up and did nothing (Empty), a player blocked an attack (Block), or a player hit their opponent (Connect). If a player whiffed on a move, it would be considered Empty. If a player got hit on wake-up, it would also be considered Empty, but I would make a special note of it.

So how did the two players stack up? Here you go:

ggpo_tournament

There have been a few heavily hyped tournaments over the past couple of weeks. I put this one among the most anticipated because of the game.

Bob Painter over at Kuroppi and Arturo Sanchez are teaming up to run The King of GGPO Tournament, scheduled to begin friday at 10 p.m. PT. It is a Super Turbo tournament, which makes it instantly awesome.

There will be three qualifying tournaments of 32 players each. It is double elimination and character lock.

More info about the tournament can be found on the Kuroppi website
It’s time GGPO had a “MAJOR” tournament and a “KING”.

Three qualifying tournaments.  Three finalists.  A RACE TO TEN.  One “KING”.

Matches will be streamed by the one and only Sabin/nycfurby!

deejayTonight during the latest Rise of the Web Warrior finals, Christian Jordan pulled off something that had not been done in the tournament series, and it wasn't even close. Christian used 7 EX meters and connected on all of them.

Stats of the match are available on the Fighting Game Stats database.

Here's a few notes about that feat:
  • It's the least amount of EX meter used by a winner, tying what Beat Ya Kold did in the Round 5 finals two weeks ago.
  • It's the third time that a winner used less than 10 EX meter. Beat Ya Kold, in his two finals appearances, used 9 and 7 EX meters, respectively.
  • As far as EX connection percentage, Christian's 1.000 mark is the best. Here's how it ranks:
Player Round EXC EXC %
Christian Jordan 7 7/7 1.000
SHGLBMX 2 14/20 .700
Beat Ya Kold 5 4/7 .571
Perfect Legend 1 8/16 .500
Far Beyond Death 3 7/14 .500
Beat Ya Kold 4 4/9 .444
Steinmania 6 5/19 .263

newstatsseriesAs mentioned before, the Starbase tournament series is the one in which I have the most stats of. I've charted the last 10 tournament finals, and the results have been unique. The one stat that has stood out has been the combo rate. I talk about that on today's Stats Series podcast.

If you want to see stats from the Starbase tournament series, it's available on the Fighting Game Stats database. You can also check out past Starbase tournaments on iPLAYWINNER's video portal.

newstatsseriesToday's Stats Series podcast looks at last night's Rise of the Web Warrior tournament final, featuring Steinmania. He won the match while not allowing a first-hit or first-combo. Surprisingly, that's not the first time that's happened in this tournament series.

Stats of the match can be found on the Fighting Game Stats database.

newstatsseriesIn today's Stats Series podcast, I make a couple comparisons to the past two Seasons Beatings finals. Yusuke Momochi was in both; he lost last year's title match but won this year's. A couple stats really stood out.

I've posted the stats of the final from last year, and it's available on the Fighting Game Stats database

Admit it. You liked the all-Phoenix "Marvel vs. Capcom 3" championship at Seasons Beatings Velocity. Some of you probably shed a tear in happiness. I'm kidding.

I asked people on Twitter to provide headlines for the matchup between Flocker and Viscant. Flocker ended up winning the tournament in the second finals.

Here's the headlines from Twitter:

"Mashing Finally Worked!" - @ipwdeuce

"Meet the Flocker" - @zonkknuckle

"The True Fate of Two Phoenixes" - @ipwdeuce

"JEEEEEEEEEEEAN!" - @min7yfr3sh

"The Reign of Dark Phoenix" - @grecco

Hirisk808 added this picture. Instead of saying "Best Game Ever," it would be replaced with "RUN RUN RUN!"

Have a headline? Add it in the comments. You can also follow me on Twitter.

By the way, here's a clip of the winners finals between the two guys where they both went Dark Phoenix. Let the laughs begin!

Video follows the jump (thanks to GUnitVer1, and video provided by MrPavySRK)

seasonsbeatingsvelocity

I'm going to try once again to give away this damn $20 gift card to Chipotle, and I'm going to do it by adding another $20 gift card to it. After two failed attempts to run a contest and get a winner, hopefully the third time proves to be the charm.

This weekend is Seasons Beatings: Velocity, and there are some heavy hitters set to do battle in the tournament.

As was the case last year, the United States will take on an international team in a 5-on-5 contest. Last year's contest was a close battle, as the United States narrowly won 13-12.

So here's the challenge:

Predict the winner of the USA vs. International 5-on-5 Super Street Fighter IV match and how many points the winning team will have.

The person that correctly guesses the team AND who comes closest to the final total without going over will win. In the event of a tie, a drawing will take place Monday morning to determine the winner.

The winner will receive a $40 gift card to Chipotle.

Here's a hint, the winning team will have at least 13 points.

The International lineup: Uryo, Mago, Tokido, Momochi, Poongko
The USA lineup: Justin Wong, Dieminion, Ricky Ortiz, PR Balrog, Wolfkrone

Examples:
  • USA wins 13-12
  • International team wins 25-0
Some additional rules before you start guessing:
  • Your guess must be between 13 and 25 points.
  • One guess per person, and your first guess is your one guess.
  • Only guesses posted here count (not on Twitter, Facebook, etc.)
  • If you're in the 5-on-5, you can't enter.
  • Only U.S. people (Sorry again, international people)
  • The deadline is 10 a.m. PT Saturday!
